Summer Updates: Stair Runners

Last week I decided to do a summer updates series for the month of July.

These are projects that can be completed in under 3 months and really make an impact on your home without getting into an extensive renovation.

Last week we discussed out tips for refreshing your kitchen.

Today we’re talking about stair runners.

Stair runners are a great way to give your home an update spruce that will make your home feel brand new.

Many homes feature a staircase when you first walk in so adding a beautiful stair runner is a great first impression for your guests.

Stair runners are fabulous for several reasons.

Reason 1: Functionality

Four years ago I worked with a real estate agent who had recently purchased a home and her husband had slipped and fallen on their staircase. This realtor decided to add a carpeted stair runner to provide traction on her stairs while also choosing a stunning pattern.

Stair cases can be slippery and adding carpet is a great for safety as it minimizes falls.

Reason 2: Cost Effective

If you have ever updated your stairs and removed the carpet to discover that your builder used pine stair treads and now you can either carpet your stairs OR replace them with solid oak treads with you want the stairs not covered by carpet.

The reason for this is that pine is a softer hardwood and pine treads are great if carpet is going over top of them but not to walk on day on day without the carpet.

Putting down oak treads can be costly and in materials and labor (thousands) whereas laying a new carpet down can be far less expensive (hundreds depending on the carpet chosen).

Reason 3: It’s pretty, duh!

Lastly, I think a stair runner can add so much personality to your staircase which is often also an entry way.

There are so many beautiful patterns out there and you may not want them in your bedrooms or living areas but the stairs can be the perfect spot.

Below are some gorgeous stair cases that we love.

Enjoy!
