Hello 2023! Our Favorite Design Trends For 2023.

I don’t know about you, but I still cannot believe it is finally 2023!

Going into the New Year, there is one thing on everyone’s minds. TRENDS!

While we are not interested in being “trendy”, we do believe it is helpful to stay current. This will allow you to elevate your home and avoid any outdated design decisions.

Reality is, I don’t really consider these trends because I believe these principles will last for years to come.

Pack up those Christmas lights and take notes – we are going to equip you with the knowledge to tackle any home project this year. Here are our top 10 design trends of 2023!

1. Color, lots of color!

While I appreciate a clean white kitchen or bathroom, I am so excited to see color making a comeback!

There are so many ways that you can add color to your next project:

-Consider painting your powder room a bold color OR add a feature wall (more on those later).

-Bring in a fun colorful backsplash tile. This past year I noticed more tile companies offered options in greens, blues, pinks and purples. Yes, I said PURPLE!

-Try a statement furniture piece in a cool color. If a sofa is too much of a commitment try out an accent chair or ottoman.

You may be asking yourself – is there a right or wrong way to play with colors?

In short, yes and no. HA!

My biggest design tip when talking about color is to go for it! So go for the blue kitchen island of your dreams.

Our homes should reflect of our personalities and who we are.

OR

Cover your dining rooms walls with playful wallpaper.

Blend those colors with neutral furniture, art, and lighting so it doesn’t feel like color overload and your good to go!

2. Staying Home?

Yes, you heard that right people are staying home in 2023.

Meaning, instead of building a new home more and more homeowners are renovating their current homes and holding off on moving until the market slows down.

The housing market has been a whirlwind these past three years.

If you are considering moving but do not want to get involved in the housing frenzy – renovate your home!

The way I think about it is if your home is dated, updating the kitchen or primary bathroom will be helpful for resale value down the line anyway.

3. Mixing The Old with The New

I adore this trend and yet I do not look at this as a trend. I truly believe this is a key design principle that creates a well curated space.

Many call this style Grandmillennial – this is term coined for those in their 20’s and 30’s mixing current design with pieces that are more traditional.

In a Grandmillennial’s home you will see antique Victorian furniture, brass details, original or applied moldings, pleated accent chairs or lampshades, and vintage area rugs.

This is a style I see lasting for years to come because it combines fresh looks of today with the sophistication and detail of the past.

4. Porcelain Slabs

This is a trend that has been around for several years and has been big in major cities such as Florida, LA, and New York.

In Atlanta we are seeing more and more clients opt for porcelain slabs in their showers, backsplashes and fireplaces.

Porcelain slabs are a great alternative to quartz because they are just as durable and a fraction of the cost. The main thing is finding an installer who is capable and comfortable installing these pieces.

The slaps are usually 5’x10′ so they create a seamless look.

Often these slabs are offered in a bookmatched option and create a piece of art, in person this detail is stunning.

5. Unique Backsplash Details

This is one of my favorite trends going into the New Year because it is so simple and cost effective yet creates major visual impact!

Remember those standard 4″ backsplashes that you see in bathrooms and kitchens? I know you do we have all had them.

Did you know that you could opt for a 6″ or a 9″ backsplash? Or that you could create a scallop or arched detail using the same quartz you’re already using?

If you are nervous, try it out in a powder room or under your range hood in the kitchen.

You won’t be sorry, trust me.

My thought is, you are already purchasing the slab and using it as backsplash. Why not make it look unique and custom? Plus, it is inexpensive to add these details, usually a couple hundred dollars.

6. Statement/ Feature Walls

Feature walls can get a bad rep.

People will paint a wall blue and call it a “statement wall” which isn’t always how to make a statement.

The whole idea is to create a wall that is interesting, carefully thought out and unique.

I have been seeing a lot of clients wanting to add molding, wallpaper or tile to create an accent wall.

I think this is a great way to add texture, architectural interest and drama into your space without going overboard.

7. Organic and Natural Textures

This trend has been popular these past couple of years and I think it is here to stay.

We are still seeing a love for bringing the outdoors indoors.

This year we are going to see more raffia, sisal, natural wood tones, and greenery.

Life is not perfect nor are our homes.

I think that people like the authenticity of natural materials and the warmth it provides in your space. If you are worried a room is not “feeling” right, consider adding some natural elements to make things feel cozy.

8. Laundry Love

As a designer I believe that every part of your home should be beautiful. I love the fact that rooms such as laundry rooms are getting major makeovers.

Say goodbye to the laundry room being a forgotten, dark room in your home.

The laundry room is TYPICALLY a smaller space. This allows the opportunity to use a bold material that you may not feel comfortable using in say the kitchen.

You can go for a bold wallpaper print or a colorful backsplash.

The great thing about this trend is that you do not have to go all out. A simple backsplash tile or peel and stick wallpaper will make this room feel joyful and happy.

Doing laundry has never been so fun.

Would you incorporate any of these ideas in your next renovation?
